Job Search QA #3 First Job Search, Choosing Resume Content, Telecommuting Jobs and More
Job Search QA #3 First Job Search, Choosing Resume Content, Telecommuting Jobs and More 3 This roundup of reader questions and answers takes a look at questions related to college students and graduates, resumes and finding telecommuting jobs. Reminder Iâve tried to keep the questions and answers as close as possible to the actual conversation but in some cases Iâve changed things to protect the readerâs identity or Iâve given a longer answer than what was possible at the time due to the fact that Twitter â" where many of these questions are coming from â" only allows 140 characters per message. First job search Do you think its better to look for a paid-internship or an entry-level position? Internships have a set timeframe with no guarantee that the hiring company can keep you on afterwards even if they want to. Full time jobs don't have that problem, from entry-level upward. However, if it will be much easier to get a paid internship quickly, do it. Then build your network while keeping your future job search in mind.eval School or work I know a guy who was looking for a job, didn't find one, then took up a master's degree. Now this raises a question: what to do when job search and studying clash? Suppose he finds his dream job tomorrow? Should he quit the academy? For this reason, most people stop job hunting during their studies and only continue when the end is in sight and the need for a job reappears. Unless they need money desperately, in which case a job would take precedence. Another case is when a job opportunity is simply too good to pass up, especially when the person knows they can go back to their studies later or continue at a slower pace (night school, distance learning, etc.) in parallel.eval What to put on your resume or CV I am currently working in IT. In my CV, I have listed all the employers and projects I have participated in. I also mention my previous jobs, most of which are not related to IT but are part of my general career, as I have been working already for many years. My colleague claims I should not mention anything that is unrelated to the type of job I am applying for. Is she right? After all, it is showing skills I have acquired as well as the fact I have been working in the past too. Your CV should have any true information that can increase your value in selling you to the company that's reading it. That's how you should define what ârelated' work experience is. Most of the time that means only listing past positions, achievements and skills in the same industry or role, but if you had outstanding success doing something else it may be worth mentioning. For example, if I'm a programmer, I would typically list my past programming jobs. But if I'm aiming for a Programmer Team Lead position for the first time, I would also add that I managed course project teams to success at university. It's not directly related, but shows that I have additional skills (leadership, organizational) that would be important for the job applied for. Telecommuting from Israel I have applied to jobs in the US that allow telecommuting. I found the open jobs on lists such as Craigslist and Monster.com but I've never received a response from any of these companies. Do you have insight or experience as to whether it's even worth spending the time to apply, or do companies automatically rule out someone who's not in the US? I always write that I'm a US citizen, pay US taxes, and am available to travel to the US several times a year. Find someone who's doing what you'd like to do and try to understand how they're doing it. That's the most effective. On LinkedIn, try contacting people in relevant US companies and see if they have any suggestions for you. You might want to join a US-based LinkedIn group in your field and draw attention to yourself by becoming an active member and having a profile that sells your skills well, but be clear that you're available for hiring or people won't think to ask. Another tactic is to grow your profile on freelancing sites like Elance.com, Guru.com, etc., where you can quickly check if there are projects for people in your field. A good freelancer can sometimes be converted to a full-time telecommuting employee if things go well consistently. Once a company likes you enough, they won't want to take a chance at losing you or even just waiting for you. But you can also nudge things in that direction if it's your goal. Searching for a career Try this one for size
Searching for a career Try this one for size There you are, just out of high school, struggling to find your direction in life. Well, if you want to head where the cash flows and the skillsets are high, then a step towards a career in finance could be exactly what youâre after. Indeed, the finance sector presents rich pickings for those with an enthusiasm for numbers and a need to strive for the best. More than this, it covers a ton of different positions, giving you ample options for career paths. So, what can you get into? Well, thereâs taxation, brokering, financial analysis, bank managing and much more besides â" but it isnât a cinch to break into any of these positions. To begin with, youâll need to work at your qualifications, with a degree in finance being a must. If youâre really diligent, you could even pair that finance degree with a joint qualification in business, allowing you to show your mettle to businesses youâre applying to. During your study time, you wonât be able to rest on your laurels â" the larger firms rarely accept anyone with a classification lower than a 2:1. While youâre studying, you might also want to consider taking on an internship. Not only will this sharpen and hone your skills, but youâll also prove to prospective future employers that you can balance work and educational life. Entering the real world Then, expect the real world to rear its ugly head â" that terrifying place after university, dropping you out into the quivering cold of the job hunt. However, if youâve worked hard enough and gained decent qualifications and experience during university, finding a job wonât take too much time. Your best bet in the employment stakes is to find a recruitment site that specialises in the field of finance. After inputting a few simple details, youâll be matched up with the ideal employer and be well on your way to gaining the ideal position. Naturally, the journey doesnât end there. Once you have a job, youâre really only at the beginning of a long career, in which youâll have to keep abreast of new financial regulations, keep clients happy, turn a profit for your company and stay within the regulatory framework. And, after all your hard work, what do you get in return? Besides a fat salary, a successful finance professional can gain a ton of fringe benefits, from bonuses to company cars, luxury offices to gifts from clients. So, if youâre standing on the cusp of your future and have success in mind, a career in finance could be ideal. Good luck!

Who Is On Your Human Bucket List - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career
Who Is On Your Human Bucket List - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career Do you have a human bucket list of people you would like to meet? Are you interested in injecting some new life into your connection circle? If not, I certainly would challenge you to do so. You might not need a job or a favor today, but chances are in the near future you will. Having a goal in mind can help filter and guide your efforts of expanding your connection circle. For instance, are you looking to broaden your cultural perspective? Or wanting to learn more about peripheral areas of your expertise? Planning for a second career? Depending on your goal, different people might be more suited for you than others at this point in time. For a professional athlete, doors are opened (especially in their team state) more readily than for the average Joe, and that should be taken advantage of. Relationships that are started in the right way can lead to endorsement partnerships, charitable and financial donations, a post sports career, or a new mentor/friend. Expand your circle There are a couple of ways of expanding your connection circle: 1 Ask people you respect and admire (your coach, family/friends, manager) if they have 2-3 contacts they would recommend you connecting with. The connections should be in line with helping to achieve your set goal. See if they wouldnât mind doing the introduction for you. 2 â" Based on your set goal, put together a bucket list of those you would like to meet. If you do not have connections to them, there is no harm in cold calling. In fact, nothing shows true desire better than a little initiative. My feeling is that a phone call is always best, especially if you have prepared your reason for wishing to meet them. The above should be done with nothing more than information gathering in mind. You are beginning a relationship, not checking a box or asking for something, and should act accordingly. Go into the meeting with set questions in areas you want to hear more about. Or if you know of someone who can help them out in their endeavors, become a connector. I have had people make meetings with me in which I thought they were going to ask for something. The great surprise was that I actually gained a connection through them that would help my business. And finally, follow-up with a thank you. I am still a fan of handwritten notes, but a well-written email highlighting a particular point from the meeting works just as well. Remember this is just the start, if there was a connection then continue the relationship. By meeting someone and showcasing genuine interest in who they are and what they do, you create extensions of your personal brand. Impressing Luxury Clients
Impressing Luxury Clients Impressing clients, getting them involved in your company and ultimately, taking their money, is essential to the success of your business. As a new business, with a tiny budget, you might stick to taking clients for businesses lunches or hiring conference rooms for meetings. You might even stretch to the odd corporate event or dinner party. You might just rely on your products and marketing campaign to do the talking. This is great and is certain to appeal to some clients. But, at some point, in order to take your business further, you need to do more. Youâll need to attract luxury clients, who arenât going to be impressed by a novelty event or party. You need to offer more. Think Quality, Not Quantity Loads of events throughout the year and a huge range of cheap products appeal to some. But, if you want to attract a high-end client or customer, you need to hold back. Cut back on your product range, and what you are offering, and instead focus on quality. Save your money and time and devote it to coming up with luxury options of very high quality. Think of it like a restaurant. Cheaper establishments often offer a massive menu. All easy, cheap and fast to prepare. Not particularly tasty or nutritious. A more premium establishment provides a much smaller menu. The food is more expensive, of a higher quality and takes longer to cook. But it tastes much better. Offer Personalization High-end clients are used to personalization. Their holidays are personalized, they buy products that are made just for them, and their décor is one of a kind. Offering customized trips and gifts might be out of your price range, but that isnât the only way to do it. When a luxury client gets in touch or makes an order, send them a handwritten thank you note and keep in touch. Sometimes, itâs the little things. Use a Private JetOf all of the private jets in use by businesses, most of them are flown by small firms and companies. Read more about business aviation news to learn more. A flight in a private jet screams luxury and appeals to everyone. If you canât afford your own, hire one for the day or consider a timeshare with other small businesses in your area. Establish Credibility High-end clients have got the money to be fussy. They can take their time to choose the right brand for them. So, theyâre never going to pick a small company that they know nothing about. So, spend some time boosting your credibility. Define your marketing strategy, get feedback from your customers and get people talking about your brand. Make sure youâve gained a reputation as a company thatâs sustainable, great for customers and a fantastic employer. Branding Branding is crucial when it comes to attracting clients, especially those of a higher caliber. Your branding should be smart, easy to read and understand. It should stand out from the crowd and be easy to remember, but it should also get people talking. Speak to a branding expert for help if this isnât your field.

Job Seekers-Whos Got Your Back
Job Seekers-Whos Got Your Back When I was a kid, I loved diving. I spent every summer at a neighborhood pool club and practiced diving for hours. My favorite and best dive was the jack-knife. In order to execute properly on a jack-knife, you need a lot of height off the board so you have time while in the air to touch your toes and then reposition your body into a diving stance to enter the water. The best jack-knifes were achieved with what was called a double bounce. Another kid would stand behind you on the diving board and mirror your steps. They needed to jump at exactly the same time as the diver in order to give the diver a great bounce and additional height for the dive. If the timing was off the diver would lose their footing and have a sub-par dive, or worse yet, just fall off the board. But when done correctly, the double bounce was amazing. It allowed you to experience weightlessness just a little bit longer and it was a wonderful ride. And this could only be achieved if there was someone behind you who was really atune to your diving style and stepssomeone who had your back.Once the dive was competed, it was the bouncers job to critique the dive. And they were never expected to sugar coat their review. Every aspect of the dive was disected: was your alignment correct, were your toes pointed, were your movements jerky or smooth, was there too much splash upon entry into the waterall these points were considered and we welcomed the feedback because we really wanted to perfect our dives. My best friend at the time was my diving buddy and the person who was always behind me on the double bounce. The fact that she was able to time her steps and jumps with mine so flawlessly still amazes meshe was a good seven inches taller than me and her diving style was quite different than mine. But she watched and listened and practiced and shared the same desire as me to succeed. And thats what made it work.I was reminded of my diving buddy recently while reading Keith Ferrazzis new book, Whos G ot Your Back. Keith recommends finding three people who will have your back and help you succeed professionally and personally. He reminds us that the best people to reach out to are those who we can expose our vulnerability to, expect candid feedback from, and trust to hold us accountable for following through on our plans and dreams. Frequently, the right person for the partnership is not our close friend or even a family member, because these people may be telling us what they think we want to hear rather than what we need to know.Job seekers really need trusted advisers that they can be honest with and be accountable to. No one should be expected to go it alone and I recommend that all job seekers have a buddy to share tips and advice with and solicit feedback from. When I was on that diving board, there was a certain vulnerability; a certain blind spotYou cant watch yourself diving in real time, so you need to rely on an observer to help you make the necessary corrections. Th e same can be said for job search. Sometimes a buddy can help you correct the blind spots you may have as a job seeker so you can go on to execute a more successful strategy.
